Films 2 and 3 would be stronger if Jack's part was played a little more straight, rather than doubling down and creating a caricature of the part.Pirates of the Caribbean is a Disney film franchise based on a theme park ride of the same name, centering around the adventures of pirate Captain Jack Sparrow on his quest for immortality and rum. Hamming it up more is no longer adding anything, the audience already get it so there's no need to lay it on as thick. But once Jack is the focus Johnny Depp no longer has the room to upstage the other players, he is already the focus, so there's no limelight to steal. That in and of itself is fine because Will and Elizabeth don't really have sufficient back story you could use to fashion more episodes from. The issue with in the next two films is that they pull focus and make Jack's mythology the focus.

That is possible because the film isn't ostensibly about Jack but Johnny Depp takes every opportunity to ham it up and steal scenes, and the editing and directing is good enough that not only does it not ruin anything but the Jack part becomes this bit of clowning chaos that is always exciting/fresh for the audience.

Part of what makes the Jack Sparrow part so fun in the first film is that Johnny Depp completely upstages everyone in any scene he's in. I know a lot of this should be obvious but you can never be too careful. If anyone in the comments has said something addressed in the above points, it was probably before I made the edit. I only posted this because I could not find such a discussion on r/movies. If this is an opinion that crops up alot, I apologise, I had not seen it to be prevalent. The whole trilogy was, of course, financially successful. I didn't mean to imply that the first film is underrated, it plainly is not. It doesn't mean I don't value comments from such people. As such, anyone here who has not watched them in a very long time, I would as I said encourage them to revisit them with an open mind. I hadn't watched them in upwards of eight years. I want to make it clear that for the longest time I thought that two and three were terrible. This post has blown up more than anything else I have ever submitted. You might be surprised by the entertainment you forgot about.Įdit: So I know it's obnoxious when people do this, but I'll say it. So if you are like me, and pretty much only watch the first one on occasion, give the whole trilogy a watch. Nothing felt out of place, and overall, the fact that they managed to not only make an epic swashbuckling trilogy, but one that works, is surprising. In short, I did not mind that it was complicated and long, because everything else made up for it. I found myself genuinely moved by Bill Turner's relationship with his son, the sword-fight wedding ceremony in the rain was bitching, and the weird Davy Jones/Calypso melodrama was, if nothing else, cool mythology. IMHO, the final battle was not a disappointment, nor were the conclusions of the character arcs.

I realised that if the script was good and funny, the visuals were terrific, I was invested in the characters, then what had I been complaining about? Obviously the film is quite complicated and full of side-plots, but I had no trouble keeping up with them, after all, this was an epic, some attention is required. And to my utmost surprise, even though I went into the film expecting it to be inferior and overlong, I instead discovered that I was not only invested, but that this had indeed become epic in scale right under my nose. The third film, once again, manages the transition rather smoothly, everything is just made a bit more extreme, a bit more magical. However, it cemented itself as being very unique in cinema at the time. What the film did sacrifice was the simplicity of the first one, and perhaps some of the dignity.

The imagery in the film remains nearly impeccable. Not only in Davy Jones but Tia Dalma, Bill Turner, and Beckett. While the second and third instalments are certainly not perfect, I think they are far more successful than they have any right to be.ĭead Man's Chest is quite successful in upping the ante, twice the swashbuckling and twice the weird quasi-mythology (which we were able to accept very easily thanks to execution), we kept our characters interesting whilst establishing new ones that remain memorable (in my opinion). I consider it to be a perfect film (not the greatest film ever made, but a perfect film). Now obviously the reception was mixed about 4 and 5 (I personally disliked four, and enjoyed five but not for it's quality so much as it's fun.) I have always been an avid fan of 'Curse of the Black Pearl' and it has been pretty much the only one I have continuously watched over the years.
